Chemical Formula Tool
When you need to include a chemical formula in a document or web post, it is difficult to get the traditional subscripts that make it easy to read. This tool uses the unicode subscript and superscript characters to format the equation properly.
Paste your plain text formula into the Formula box and press the Format button. The properly formatted equation will appear below with a Copy button. Push the button to copy the result to your clipboard for inclusion whereever you need it!
Example:
Go to the Wavellite page on mindat.org:
Copy the formula listed:
Al3(PO4)2(OH,F)3 · 5H2O
and paste it into the form. The result is:
Al₃(PO₄)₂(OH,F)₃ · 5H₂O
Notes:
There are a few unusual scenarios where the subscripts cannot be created:
- subscripts with arithmetic or algebraic variables
- subscripts with brackets
- subscripts with ranges of values
In these cases, the input notation will be maintained so that the result is as close as possible.
Note also that this will only work if the font you are using supports these unicode characters. Modern fonts will be fine but if you don't see the subscripts when you paste into your document, try a different font.
